Trout in the Classroom

Teachers, Phylis Wojcik, Everett Smith, and Pat Shelly, and their classes, following another successful release of salmon fingerlings into the Grand River watershed.

The Perrin Lansing Chapter focuses on education of our members and the public on important mission issues.

Trout/salmon in the classroom is a National TU initiative and is also part of Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources “Project Fish” program which encourages involvement of youth in a long-term and continuous, community supported, sportfishing and aquatic resource educational program.

Under the direction of Lawrence Goff and Ric Augustine, the Perrin Lansing Chapter financed the purchase of fish tanks, filters, aerators, and more at a cost of about $1,200. This equipment was distributed to three local high schools in Bath, Ovid/Elsie, and Williamston, Michigan. The Chapter also provides technical support to Resurrection School and Pewamo-Westphalia school.

Students are responsible for maintaining the appropriate environment for the eggs and developing fry and are excited to follow their progression to fingerlings. The Chapter assists with classrooms in the Ingham and Clinton County area.

Students reflect on their contributions in helping to sustain the salmon population in the Grand River watershed.
